Hey friends!
Hope you enjoyed your first impression of us!
To give a quick summary of our discussion on making friends – the episode can be roughly divided into two themes: how to present yourself and how to make friends. Within and across these two subjects we discussed being an attentive listener, including the FORD method[1], finding (and maybe leaving!) a friend group, and finding friends through activities.
Key takeaways from this episode include:
1) Focus on making other people feel comfortable in conversation
2) Meet friends by joining clubs, going out, and just hanging around campus
3) Friend groups change – and that’s good!
4) And, of course, be your authentic self!
We did make a research mistake this time around. We cited this article[2] that discusses a Cornell Study on first impressions. The study itself says that first impressions (based on a photograph) last for six months, even after face to face interaction. This seems contradictory to the adage we spewed at you for a whole episode, and it is! But, the study itself has valuable advice on how to make that first impression count – including a “firm handshake” and variations of being smiley.
We’re incredibly sorry for this oversight on our parts, but, we still encourage you to look over the article itself for some more tips. And, frankly, as long as you stay true to yourself – you’ll find your people. At the end of the day, first impressions are something you are in control of – so put your best foot forward. And if you make an embarrassing mistake *cough* mushroom farm *cough*, you’ll outgrow it. We promise.
Peace,
Uma and the Pod Squad
